The Black-capped Chickadee is mostly gray with black cap and throat and white cheek patch. Chickadees that look somewhat alike can often be told apart by their sounds. Fee-bee, this species whistles, the first note of the song a full tone higher than the second. Its call is the familiar chick-a-dee. In the Middle West and Southeast the longer, more sibilant su-fee, su-bee, ending on a low note. Its chick-a-dee calls are more rapid.
